The Sexy Plant, a project to make agriculture more efficient and safer, Aquabib, a business idea to get water from waste and Pia Bioplastics, to produce on large-scale plastics friendly to the environment, will be the Spanish representatives in the European final of ClimateLaunchpad, the main European business ideas competition for clean technologies promoted by Climate-KIC, an initiative of the European Union.
The three have been proclaimed winners of the Spanish edition of the competition. The final, held in Valencia, brought together 10 teams. All of them work in projects related to clean technologies, among others, efficient water management, energy efficiency, networks and smart cities, sustainable transport and new materials and technologies for sustainable building.
The Sexy Plant, the winning project, working on the creation of a plant that, naturally, would greatly reduce the use of pesticides harmful to the environment, while facilitating increased harvests.
Aquabib, second prize, already has patents registered in several countries. His project goes through using solar energy to get fresh from trash or sea water.
Pia Bioplastics, third prize, wants to manufacture on large scale environmentally friendly plastic by using raw potatoes. Father and son run the idea.
This is the second edition of ClimateLaunchpad Spain, the biggest competition of European business ideas for clean technologies promoted by Climate-KIC, the main initiative of the European Union on climate change innovation. The ClimateLaunchpad is a programme of the European Union coordinated from Valencia. It seeks for entrepreneurs with business ideas or businesses with less than a year old who do not yet have a product on the market, lack of income or capital. It provides training, advice and, for the winners, a prize.
After receiving 41 applications for the programme, 11 business ideas were elected. Those have enjoyed a two-day boot camp held in Valencia, two days of training with consultants or coaches of international prestige. They have coached entrepreneurs on issues related to the focus of the business, marketing strategy, sales techniques or control of the finances of the company.
After boot camp, all the teams involved in the six ClimateLaunchpad enjoyed the coaching sessions to deepen their proposed business value, their business model and presenting potential business. Finally, in June, a jury with some notable entrepreneurs has selected the three Spanish teams who will attend the European final of the Netherlands, on 4 September.
There, the winner will be awarded 10,000 euros and the 8 best ideas from around the continent will enter the Climate-KIC Accelerator, another European program to attract start-ups and entrepreneurs to innovate in order to make Europe the business leader in the fight against climate change.
The ClimateLaunchpad is an activity of the European Union that in Spain is coordinated by AVAESEN, the Valencian Association of companies in the energy sector, together with the Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness (IVACE), an agency of the Generalitat Valenciana, the IDEAS Institute and InnDEA.
