{"id":23544,"date":"2016-03-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-06T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spain.climate-kic.org\/?news=the-future-of-sustainable-transport-is-already-here-with-the-hyperloop"},"modified":"2018-11-01T08:35:42","modified_gmt":"2018-11-01T08:35:42","slug":"the-future-of-sustainable-transport-is-already-here-with-the-hyperloop","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/spain.climate-kic.org\/en\/news\/the-future-of-sustainable-transport-is-already-here-with-the-hyperloop\/","title":{"rendered":"The future of sustainable transport is already here with the Hyperloop!!"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li>A team of five students from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), a Climate -KIC partner , were the winners in two categories of the Hyperloop award competition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Their design would be able to build an ultra-fast transport system maximizing energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The aerospace company SpaceX, through its owner Elon Musk (\u00a0also founder of Tesla, an electric car company and\u00a0of Pay Pal, financial services and electronic payment, \u00a0and of SolarCity, a company of\u00a0solar power\/energy\u00a0products, set up a couple of years ago an international competition for the design of its ultra-fast train. This revolutionary train, Hyperloop, is a land transport system whose wagons or capsules, called pods, are driven by compressed air.<\/p>\n<p>Musk, a 44 year-old visionary, has developed\u00a0his business and philanthropic activities in three areas he considered &#8220;major problems&#8221;.- the\u00a0internet, renewable energy and space. In fact, his underlying motivation for the creation of SolarCity and Tesla Motors was to fight global warming.<\/p>\n<p>Motivated by his philanthropy to stimulate innovation in those areas that concerned him, he launched the SpaceX Hyperloop Competition, which encouraged academia, especially university students and independent engineering teams, to create ideas and develop them to accelerate the implementation of a functional prototype of Hyperloop. The Hyperloop was a project he began in 2012 and was designed to search for\u00a0young talent that might\u00a0make the best design for future development.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spain.climate-kic.prod.twkmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2018\/10\/DSC_0034.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-16740 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/spain.climate-kic.prod.twkmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2018\/10\/DSC_0034.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0034\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a>And this is where this young team of geniuses appeared, <a href=\"http:\/\/hyperloopupv.com\/\">UPV Makers<\/a>. Five Valencian students of the UPV, motivated by their own youth, their inquisitiveness, their creativity, talent and \u2026their boldness, enlisted in this aerospace design adventure and won two of the categories Musks\u00b4s competition on 30<sup>th<\/sup> January: Top Design Concept and the subcategory Propulsion\/Compression Subsystem Technical Excellence Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Among them, in the building category,\u00a0 MIT won the first prize with their simple but effective and robust design. <em>\u201cA big University had to win in that category. They have lots of resources and very bright minds working almost full time\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But when it came to the Design Concept, Makers UPV had a big competitive advantage. <em>\u201cWe didn\u2019t have so many restrictions as the teams in \u201cBuilding\u201d<\/em>,\u00a0we were able to come up with a completely new idea that fits better with Musk\u2019s idea of hypervelocity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team was able to develop a design that levitates through attraction of the pod to the top of the tube instead of the typical air bearing configuration, which was seen in almost all teams. This way, their rail-free solution could save up to 30% in construction costs of the Hyperloop ($188M). <em>\u201cWe designed a new configuration of levitation units that maximize energy efficiency as well as allowing a high degree of scalability\u201d<\/em> said one of the members of the team.<\/p>\n<p>The Valencians won a demanding jury over, which assessed mainly innovation, design, originality , feasibility of the prototype, its budget , the level of detail , its strength in testing and quality of the supporting documentation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spain.climate-kic.prod.twkmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2018\/10\/hyperloop-image.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16748 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/spain.climate-kic.prod.twkmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2018\/10\/hyperloop-image.jpg\" alt=\"hyperloop image\" width=\"669\" height=\"304\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spain.climate-kic.prod.twkmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2018\/10\/DSC_0023.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16746 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/spain.climate-kic.prod.twkmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2018\/10\/DSC_0023.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0023\" width=\"669\" height=\"473\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During the last weekend in January, the participating teams flocked\u00a0to the University College Station A &amp; M of Texas, to\u00a0display their projects in order to create the Hyperloop pod and win the prize.These teams came from 20 countries, mostlyof \u00a0US origin and some with up to 90\u00a0participants per team\u00a0from different nationalities. Only 5 people were the Valencian team, an issue that also surprised the jury.<\/p>\n<p>When the Director of Climate-KIC Spain, Jose-Luis Mu\u00f1oz, found out this achievement, he contacted their teacher, Vicente Dolz, in order to learn more about the project and meet the team. He was invited to attend their project presentation to the first-year students in order to motivate them and demonstrate that it is possible to make dreams happen with innovative talent.<\/p>\n<p>At this meeting, Jose-Luis Mu\u00f1oz, Director of Climate-KIC Spain with other Climate-KIC team members, explained to these UPV students the opportunities and synergies that can be developed with Climate-KIC to fight climate change with their proposals,\u00a0since the Polytechnic University of Valencia is a Climate-KIC affiliate.\u00a0Throughout the course\u00a0of this meeting\u00a0questions were raised\u00a0about innovative projects and the possibility of transforming\u00a0these ideas into real products and services that would\u00a0benefit society by preventing global warming .<\/p>\n<p>They are young people who met in the setting of the Polytechnic University of Valencia,\u00a0\u00a0and in the alumni association of the University, the Makers UPV. This organization within the University encourages students to\u00a0participate in such projects and competitions. They have similar profiles and ages, between 22 and 23,\u00a0two of them came from Industrial Engineering and 3 are studying the Degree of Aerospace Engineering. But the \u201d<em>keys for the<\/em><em> success of the team have been the\u00a0\u00a0close working knowledge we had of each other and how far each of us could progress<\/em> &#8230;&#8221; said one of them.<\/p>\n<p>We were impressed by the simplicity, naturalness and friendlness\u00a0of these young geniuses when they explained their adventure to the young students. Also\u00a0they talked about the difficulties found during the process &#8230; .such as the project being submitted 20 minutes before the deadline, 19-hour trip to get to Texas or the exams they had before and during the contest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spain.climate-kic.prod.twkmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2018\/10\/DSC_0026.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-16744 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/spain.climate-kic.prod.twkmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2018\/10\/DSC_0026.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0026\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This last issue is their main complaint. All said, they hope that with this award Spanish government will notice that supporting motivated students doesn\u2019t only mean providing them with economic resources: <em>\u201cWhat we want is a flexible university system that gives students like us more freedom to participate in events that generate value.<\/em> <em>Sometimes one has the impression that there was no midpoint: either you study or you participate in the contest. In the case of an elite athlete this would have been much easier<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The presentation began with an introduction and the background\u00a0to Hyperloop by\u00a0their teacher and mentor Vicente Dolz, who then gave the floor to the five students. They explained Hyperloop in a very simple and illustrative manner: it is a train or tube to transport goods and people. This small tube would move at high speed, levitating inside a larger pipe, which would be the channel infrastructure. <em>&#8220;It is<\/em><em> something similar to the system used by cashiers in supermarkets, which placed the money in a tube that is transported through a larger tube by suction effect. In the case of this train there is no suction but the vehicle has its own propulsion system, &#8220;<\/em>said one of the team members.<\/p>\n<p>The propulsion system was similar to that of an airplane engine, with a compression-expansion cycle, without the need of storing air tanks inside the pod. A reliable braking system and safety measures were also designed to obtain a \u201cfault-tolerant system\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spain.climate-kic.prod.twkmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2018\/10\/DSC_00281.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16743 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/spain.climate-kic.prod.twkmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2018\/10\/DSC_00281.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0028\" width=\"669\" height=\"444\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;It is a revolutionary form of transport but has several technological limitations&#8221;<\/em> says Dolz. The high speed is not a problem, as this is common on planes. The only thing that is being researched is how acceleration and deceleration can be made comfortable for travelers, as well as emergency braking and navigation control. What is more, it works with renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>The Hyperloop already has a business and energy management model in place and is expected to be profitable in eight years.\u00a0It\u2019s attraction. It\u2019s the future\u201d, that\u2019s how their slogan sounds.<\/p>\n<p>After this amazing experience, they came back home with two trophies signed by Elon Musk. <em>\u201cThis is not the end. We are only five people which is not enough for building it, but if we capture the attention of SpaceX and we obtain enough resources, this could become a reality.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And these young people are on their way. They are ready\u00a0to be part of the new economy, the low carbon economy, where sustainable transport plays a key role in minimizing CO2 emissions or avoiding them altogether.
